The AAOS launched the Shoulder & Elbow Registry (SER) with the leadership of the SER Steering Committee, including representatives from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), as well as representatives of the AAOS Board of Directors (BOD). Working in collaboration with the specialty societies, the Academy created this registry to collect shoulder and elbow procedural data across the United States. National data allows for establishing implant survivorship, tracking revisions, and improving the quality of patient care.

The SER is currently comprised of three modules: shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff repair, and elbow arthroplasty. The SER began collecting shoulder arthroplasty procedure data in 2018 and expanded to rotator cuff repair and elbow arthroplasty procedures in 2019; this includes retroactive data submissions as early as 2015 for all registry modules.

The first annual SER Report Preview was released in the fall of 2019 and served as the foundation for expansion into the SER 2019 Annual Report. This ensured identification and analysis of relevant and impactful data to improve the quality of patient care. The 2020 Annual Report is the second annual report reflecting data related to procedures performed in the SER participating institutions between 2015 and 2020. In addition to growth of the SER over the past year, 2020 also saw the first academic output from the registry in the form of a poster presentation at the ASES Annual Meeting entitled Trends in the Use of Superior Capsular Reconstruction in the United States using the AAOS Shoulder and Elbow Registry.
